Just to add another laptop model to the list: A Sony Vaio GN-FZ250FE.

This laptop came with Window Vista, which runs the CPU significantly
cooler than Ubuntu, the latter needing to use the cooling fan all the
time because its temperature rarely drops from 55 Celsius. The NVidia
GPU runs about 5 degrees hotter than the CPU, even when using Metacity
instead of Compiz Fusion.

I've seen this behavior in a brand-new Toshiba laptop too, but I don't
have it near to check the model, and reading all the comments I realize
any people have this problem too. When asked, it's kinda embarrassing to
admit that Windows Vista is greener than Ubuntu 8.10 on many laptops.
