Sounds similar to something that happens on my laptop, which is a bug which has been reported elsewhere (I'm trying to track down the link as I type). Adjusting the brightness of the screen results in X input being redirected away from the window manager somehow.
Do you have the "dim display when idle" option set in power management? Try unchecking that box for now and see if that helps. The cause for the bug has been identified, if it's the same thing that I have affecting me.
