It is clearly a very generalized display problem and I now fear that many of the previous bugs I filed or subscribed to, where actually the same thing. These are: compiz.real compiz-plugins metacity pulseaudio gnome-login-sound and possibly more I cannot start any new application that requires a gui. Therefore nano and cat work just fine.
