This might be a silly question, so forgive me if you already thought of
this, but do you have gnome-panel configured to show the Notification
Area applet? Pidgin might not show the Buddy List by default, but be
starting into it's notification mode. Please let me know if this makes
sense, and again I apologize if this is something you've already looked
into.
Another tip you can try is to reproduce this issue with an Ubuntu LIVE
CD and report back if the problem still exists on Ubuntu 8.10 LIVE CD?
