I am not at a place where I can test this bug, as my one mac mini is now in production. I have not had any difficulties since I wrote the initial report.
Further, the problem I had where a soft restart (without powering down) would hang the system eventually stopped happening - I believe this coincided with newer kernel versions. If there are multiple reports of ubuntu installing fine on mac minis out of the box I'd take that as sufficient proof that this problem has been resolved.
