Having had a look at gnome-power-cmd.sh, it just sends the request to
hibernate off to DBus:

dbus-send --session --dest=org.freedesktop.PowerManagement              \
                  --type=method_call --print-reply --reply-timeout=2000 \
                  /org/freedesktop/PowerManagement                      \
                  org.freedesktop.PowerManagement.Hibernate

This might work with KDE too (I'm not sure about the extent to which KDE
can use DBus).
