Actually, I meant to report this issue myself, because I consistently
found issues with it:

a) The fglrx kernel module is not loaded properly on bootup (has to be added to
/etc/modules manually).
b) The /usr/lib/libGL.so is usually symlinked to the wrong library (MESA rather
than ATI).

I'm not too sure about (b), since on a recent Edgy install I only had to
do (a) to get proper 3D support, but only after a reboot (loading the
fglrx module dymnamically didn't work for some weird reason; perhaps
conflict with the open source ati/radeon driver? I don't know).

Can someone confirm is the linux-restricted-modules package actually
does set up the module auto-loading properly? If not, perhaps that
should be added to the postinstall script and the end-user be prompted
to reboot?
