Public bug reported:

I have an Ubuntu 8.10 box connected on a KVM. If I boot the machine
with another PC selected on the KVM, then Ubuntu will have the wrong
screen-resolution. The easy fix for this is to press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE
to reset the X server. I have learned, however, that this only works
correctly at the GDM login screen if I have not started the login, at
all. If I've entered my name and then -- at the password prompt --
realize I need to reset X, then I get caught in an error loop.

I'm guessing that this will be easily recreated (or disproved?!) and
that the problem is simply that the GDM code doesn't respond properly to
shutdown requests when it's displaying the password prompt, as opposed
to the username prompt.

P.S. I'm running the Nvidia 177 proprietary video driver, as
recommended by the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers module.
