Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

The new volume control released for Jaunty has no option to enable or
disable digital audio output via an IEC958/SPDIF optical/coaxial output.
When I reinstalled Jaunty, there was no sound coming out of my surround
sound system, which is connected to my sound card via a coaxial cable.
Before I could use Gnome volume control out of the box to turn on the
analogue surround and digital audio output (via ALSA). Now, the new
volume control does not have these options. I have to:

a) kill pulseaudio to default back to ALSA;
b) enable IEC958 by pressing 'M' to unmute the IEC958 output;
c) restart pulseaudio.

My analogue output on my sound card would not work either regardless of
how the volume was set. I had to enable the front speakers and turn the
volume up via the ALSA mixer to hear sound out of my headphones.

There needs to be an easier way to enable analogue surround and digital
audio output in the new Gnome volume control, otherwise new users may
wonder why sound is not working on their setup.

** Affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
