I still have the same problem, these days with Ubuntu 8.10. I am also dual booting with Debian Lenny and Hibernate on Debian has always worked using uswsusp. I used to be able to hibernate using s2disk on Ubuntu, using the command line but even this does not work these days, the screen just locks up and then comes right back without anything happening.
