I gave up on the onboard ati card and installed a nvidia one. That didn't work either and I have since found that the problem probably is with the x64 system. With a dedicated x64 kernel the video is fine. I suppose that would also be the case with a fglrx driver but as the nvidia card works better in detecting my monitor ( I don't have to reset all the time now) I am not gong to find out unless someone really wants me to.
