Can you please start a terminal (Accessories -> Terminal ) instead of a root terminal . This so you minimize running things as root, The $ dollar sign represents the prompt in the terminal, so you only need to type the command after the $. Because you are using a Root Terminal you are seeing another sign as the prompt.
