This crash went away after removing the Tahoma truetype font that had been copied over from an old Windows box.
The warning said "failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Tahoma 9.75'", but I think a segfault is a step beyond "ugly output". Oh well, it's working now.
