Well I'm still experiencing the problem with the nvidia-glx-180 drivers. The upstream bug report (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18668) said something about it maybe being due to the use of animated cursors. I tried to test this out by installing a cursor theme without animations, but I could not find any. Let me know if anyone tests that theory.
