(1) won't succeed until you have the fixes that have been added to
Hardy and Intrepid.  Booting degraded is what's broken in <Hardy, and
fixed thereafter.

I recommend that you backup your most important data, and upgrade to
8.04, reboot, upgrade to 8.10, reboot, and then grub install to your
RAID device.
