This is not a problem with the nvidia graphics drivers packages in
Ubuntu. I see that you downloaded the script from nVidia, instead of
installing the package from intrepid-updates.

First, check your software sources. You can do this in Gnome from ...
System --> Administration --> Software Sources
or in Synaptic from
Settings --> Repositories

Go to the updates tab and check that Recommended Updates (intrepid-
updates) is checked. Make sure that you somehow reload the package
list. (The "Reload" button in Synaptic will do this)

You'll want to remove the effects of the nVidia script (honestly, been
awhile since I used the nVidia script, but I believe they send removal
instructions with the script). Unfortunately, I remember seeing
indications in the forums that the nVidia script can mess things up, but
I'm not certain what all you need to do to strip it back off. Perhaps
others can contribute here?

Once the nVidia version is gone (use the nv or vesa driver in the
meantime), go to your favorite package manager and make sure either
jockey-gtk (for gnome, xubuntu, etc) or jockey-kde (for kubuntu) is
installed. Also, make sure dkms is installed.

Exit your package manager and go to...
System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers
Choose the appropriate driver for your system and select activate. Once
everything gets finished, go back into your package manager and make sure you
have the latest version of nvidia-glx-96 (or whichever version you installed in
Hardware Drivers).

Then you should be ready for restart.
