with a fresh Ubuntu 8.10 install, i was getting no sound on a Sony Vaio model PCG-4E1L and the Intel 82801DB-ICH4 sound card. sound was restored by pressing the "Sound Effect" button, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6584286#post6584286
