I posted above and would like to say that I unmounted the automounted drive and mounted it manually using the mount command from /dev/sdb1 to /mnt/usbdrive and it was blazing (ok comparatively.. 13-18 MB/s and consistent. Beautiful sight. Now I want to create a workaround script to do that automatically and fire up nautilus using that mount point.
I need to test this on my non-laptop computer next and see if it's the same problem as perhaps it's hardware specific?? Currently I am using a tablet pc. Maybe others have laptops as well?
