I posted above and would like to say that I unmounted the automounted
drive and mounted it manually using the mount command from /dev/sdb1 to
/mnt/usbdrive and it was blazing (ok comparatively.. 13-18 MB/s and
consistent. Beautiful sight. Now I want to create a workaround script to
do that automatically and fire up nautilus using that mount point.

I need to test this on my non-laptop computer next and see if it's the
same problem as perhaps it's hardware specific?? Currently I am using a
tablet pc. Maybe others have laptops as well?
