I am still experiencing this problem on my Lenovo Thinkpad X200. When I am on battery the the disk spins down but every time I open a new page the disk spins up and writes something to the disk which locks firefox for 2-3 seconds.
I have started to use Opera when on battery just to avoid it. There ought to be a option in Firefox whether or not cared for smart history and that.
