"messy video with good mouse pointer" - this is the AGPMode issue, it
won't be fixed before you file a bug on it.

Please try this: boot from the Jaunty CD adding "text" to the
boot/kernel parameters. Log in to the text console and edit xorg.conf to
include the ModeDebug option. Then run "sudo Xorg -probeonly". It will
flash but come back to the text console, and you can now copy the log to
your hard drive or somewhere else.

You can also add
 Option "BusType" "PCI"
in the Device section to workaround the AGPMode issue. Or find the right 
AGPMode as explained on that wiki page...

Then you can start X with "startx".
