Works like a charm.
I own a lap-top Toshiba Satellite L40-13G (Short Model Name: PSL40E).

All I did was:
Add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" had to be added to 
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base "
=================================================
If you get a "Permission Denied" response when trying to save the file then 
simply do the following:
1) Open a new shell window
2) Type in 
        sudo nano  /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
3) You may (or may not) be prompted for a root/admin password - type it in
4) Go to the bottom of the file and add the following line
        options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
5) Reboot - you should hear sounds...
