Public bug reported:
I was using Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE4.2 RC from the testing PPA. Then I
decided to upgrade it to 9.04. I installed update-manager and ran
update-manager -d and started the upgrade.
Everything went nice. However, when I rebooted the computer and tried to
log in, the screen displayed weird colours and I came back to kdm. I
couldn't go to a VT because it'd give me such lockup error too. I got
locked up in kdm, and I couldn't even start a failsafe session.
Since I really have no idea how to download any other DE or etc to try
and get into the system, My useful guess is that this is a driver
problem. I have an Intel Celeron M processor with 900GM graphic card -
in Ubuntu 8.10 using MESA DRI Intel 915GM driver. Perhaps that's a
problem with 2.6.x intel driver, if that's the version shipped in Alpha
3 =)
