This patch from upstream [1], commited 4 hours ago, is very similar to the one in comment 16. It's supposed to bump the texture limit on i965 to 4kx4k. I'm about to test it in a minute on Jaunty, where it's the only change required to solve this issue. If it works, I suggest it should be cherry picked and applied on Jaunty's mesa.
