This is not a guest only issue. I have the same problem with the main user in a fresh installation (8.10 from Alternate CD, nothing special). I thought I had made a mistake, maybe in my own partitioning scheme. Thus the third time I let the installer take the whole disk (/ and swap). The result was the same.
At first reboot from installer, everything is OK up to gdm. After gdm login, black screen with moving mouse pointer but nothing from the keyboard, in particular no going back to tty1 with Ctrl-Alt-F1 to read possible error logs or properly shut down. Have to reset the computer. On subsequent reboots and logins, empty screen with ubuntuish colour instead of black but same behaviour. After a reboot, I went Ctrl-Alt-F1 before login and could read auth.log which looks about the same as above. This is not limited to the first user. In tty1, I created a user login:guest, password:guest. For this user also the first time black screen and no Gnome session and no way out. Idem in ubuntuish colour on other tries. As for my auth.log, since I couldn't get to a Gnome session, I am writing this from another machine in another place and cannot attach auth.log as a file. I am copying from Naveen, and pasting with adaptations following my notes on paper. (In my case, part of the gnome- keyring messages were in French.)
