I fixed it using dselect (it removed a lot of packages, including
ubuntu-desktop(!!!!), cups and so on). Then I used aptitude and apt-get
to reinstall ubuntu-desktop.

UGLY HACK for something that should work out of the box,  Everything is
working fine, but I knew the importance of not removing essential
packages (I have a lot of experience making linux unstable and having to
fix it).
