Hi Scott,

just a statement from my (debian maintainer) side. The name is just a result of 
upstream package name (which I just did take over). Installing the check 
command templates not into /usr/share/nagios-plugins/ but to 
/usr/share/nagios-snmp-plugins/ is just normal, since they are related to an 
other source package.
The only problem is the use of /usr/share/nagios-plugins/dpkg/functions shipped 
by nagios-plugins-basic
, I will fix it by depend on nagios-plugins-basic or maybe copy over the file 
into the package itself with the next version of the debian package.
