** Description changed:

Compaq Presario SR1550nx with 3400+ AMD Athlon 64 processor, 1 Gig ram,
200 GB hard drive, Light Scribe DVD/CD R/W. Windows XP is already
installed so I am installing a dual boot system. Windows was
defragmented and checked for errors before attempting to install Ubuntu.

Downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit LTS net (minimal) install ISO image
for #20070308ubuntu40 (image number found after pressing F9 in the boot
menu.) Burned the CD at 16X. The computer booted successfully into the
installation program. I used the default installation settings except
for the Ubuntu partition size was set to 83 GB. The retrieval of intial
components from the server was very slow, like the it was waiting a long
time in que for each component. After guided partioning completed, base
system began downloading and error "Failed to download base system"
appeared with 6% base system downloaded. On second try - "Failed getting
release file" error appeared with 8% downloaded, and subsequent errors
like "couldn't download Aptitude" and for a lot of other packages.
Several tries made and all failed. I chose "Abort Installation". This
was the most recent attempt after failure a few days ago.

I expected it to go smoothly the same as the 32 bit system did on my
laptop. I also tried installing from the live CD 64 bit Ubuntu 8.04 that
I burned at 16X. It seemed to hang in the middle of the process. I did
not try running the system from the live CD first.

+ Trying to run the live 64 bit CD on the computer the screen filled up with:
+ [xxx.xxxxx] (rapidly ascending numbers) followed by:
+ SQUASHFS ERROR SBBREAD failed reading 0x7c1df size a4e7
+ UNABLE TO READ PAGE, BLOCK 1f06d996 size a4e7
+ I cut the power when the [xxx.xxxx] reached something like [467.xxxx]
+
The box "In what package did you find this bug?" in this report form did
not display the choice of packages for me.
