As mentioned in the original report, I have fixed my USB automount issue by 
modifying the file.

I was raising the issue because, since I had not manually added that
file myself I assumed it must have been added as part of a package or
distribution upgrade. As there seem to be a number of threads on the
forums related to USB automounting I felt this issue may be relevant to
others.

Is there any way to view the history of the HAL and gparted packages
(since I assume the file must at one stage have belonged to one of them)
in order to determine where the file came from? If it is something that
was introduced to work around an issue that has since been fixed
elsewhere, it should have been removed as part of the package upgrade
that fixed the issue, right?
