OOPS! After I mailed the last message, (I was dooing some checking while I was writing it) ... the sound started going on and off every few seconds, as if something was overloading, shutting down and starting up agian. I rebooted. NO sound. I then did ps aux and killed an entry for sound: /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 16. I got my sound back on the headphones. I hope this helps.
