  Binary package hint: cups

I've had this problem for three Ubuntu releases. When I try to print
using Ubuntu 8.04 and a Brother HL-730 Plus printer the output often
  looks like this:

  %-123...@pjl
                   @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE

This kind of stuff gets printed out forever on every page until I cancel
the job and power down the printer. Occasionally, when I restart the
printer it will start to work ok as long as I print the test page first,
but usually when I turn the printer back on it goes back to printing
  garbage.

I use a USB cable to connect the printer. I installed the printer with
the default driver using the simple steps in the Ubuntu printing
utility. I've found others with similar problems and have reinstalled
everything as instructed, but the problem persists. It looks to me like
the printer command is being printed instead of the content of what is
supposed to be printed. What is going on? What should I do?

+ This bug is not a duplicate of #287240. I made the changes recommended there
and the problem continued. When I tried printing out the page for #287240 in
Firefox I got junk that looked like the following:
+ -123...@pjl
+ @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = HBP
+ @l...@e@g...@ge `xy2pXy
+
+ This was followed by a line and a half of weird characters I can't type.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 287240
   printer prints "garbage" like: %!PS-Adobe-3.0, %%Creator: (Openoffice.org
2.4) for pages...instead of printing the actual page
