My system has ben unstable for a few weeks now. Installing a package or turning
on the panel will usually result in a hang.
I am using Xubuntu 8.04 with kernel 2.6.24-23.
This is the error message when I tried to turn on the panels:

The program 'xfce4-places-plugin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
