This happens to me, I have the newest dist. of ubuntu 8.10, My laptop is also a Dell xps 1210, my sound card model its a STAC9221 A1, the only way to fix this problem is when I type in the terminal "sudo alsa force- reload" after reloading alsa the sound is perfect.
