This is a grub bug, I believe. I have installed Ibex AMD64 Alternate on
a Dell Optiplex 320 here. The installation was fine. When I reboot, it
hangs. I assumed at first it was a wonky ACPI implementation and tried
various versions of pci=bios pci=nomsi noapic apm=off acpi=off I was
getting NO output at all so I dropped to a grub command line

Tried:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/mapper/calvinvg-root apm=off 
acpi=off pci=bios

Once I hit enter on the line above, the machine hung and the display
flickers. You can read some of the previous grub output on the screen
between flickers.

A google suggests it's a known problem with Optiplex 320's

Time to try LILO...
