This behaiviour suddely stopped after being logged in for two hours (vmware machine sitting in background), no apparent reason ( I was at the time looking at the gnome "run" application, system monitor, and an idle terminal, nothing of which reproduces the remedy when I shutdown and boot again (behaviour is back to snafu)
