Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

When I have pulseaudio (ver. 0.9.10-2ubuntu9.3 from intrepid-updates)
installed, my sound card disappears from the Volume Applet. In that
case, the only device option available in Volume Applet is my USB
microphone. There is no way to control loudspeaker volume. However, if
I uninstall pulseaudio (which forces ubuntu-desktop also to be
uninstalled), my sound card reappears. This problem appeared for no
apparent reason. It may have related to update of kernel from ver.
2-6-27.11-26 to 2-6-27.11-27, but I didn't notice it until a couple of
weeks after the update so I don't know whether there's any relationship.

When pulseaudio is installed, alsamixer will not run. (When pulseaudio
is uninstalled, alsamixer works properly). This is the output when I
try to run alsamixer with pulseaudio installed:

ALSA lib conf.c:2700:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library
libasound_module_conf_pulse.so
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory

This may be a related bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/273578.
However, my problem is not solved by killing pulseaudio because it isn't
running in the first place. When I start pulseaudio from a terminal,
the output is:

When pulseaudio is running, I do have a pulseaudio output device in the
Volume Applet but no sound. Ttrying to produce sound with pulseaudio
running causes applications to crash. Downgrading pulseaudio to ver.
0.9.10-2ubuntu9 doesn't make a difference.
