I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 this morning and the problem remains. I tried reinstalling the foomatic-rip from bug 287240, and it made no difference. One additional thing I noticed this time is that the printer starts printing as soon as the 'Data' light starts flashing. When everything prints normally (with my Windows machine that I can't get rid of until this problem is resolved) the light flashes for a while and then the page prints.
