I'm getting the same error on edgy, after installing and uninstalling
various other font packages. I'm guessing this is why a lot of the fonts
that I supposedly have installed aren't showing up in gtkfontsel or
xlsfonts -- for instance, none of the bitstream vera fonts, and none of
the msttcorefonts.

If my list of packages matters, here's what I did:

aptitude install msttcorefonts sun-java5-fonts xfonts-terminus xfonts-
terminus-oblique

aptitude remove ttf-bengali-fonts ttf-devanagari-fonts ttf-gujarati-
fonts ttf-indic-fonts ttf-kannada-fonts ttf-malayalam-fonts ttf-oriya-
fonts ttf-punjabi-fonts ttf-tamil-fonts ttf-telugu-fonts

But that left me with super ugly fonts almost everywhere, which
apparently are due to gsfonts-x11. And the lucida fonts from the sun
package weren't usable (at least, emacs crashes if I try to start it
using lucidatypewriter), so I removed those two packages:

aptitude remove sun-java5-fonts gsfonts-x11

That got rid of the ugly fonts, but I still don't have the bitstream
vera or msttcore fonts.
