Public bug reported:

I'm testing Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha3 x64 on a machine with an Audigy 2 ZS
sound card. The sound is cracking and scratching. It doesn't depend on
whether Alsa or PulseAudio is selected as sound server. If trying to
plug the audio connector into another out during running Rhythmbox or
the Audio test in the audio settings the respective program or the whole
system freeze.
