I also tested our hardware with a different test system (an AMD dual core
system)
--> All the errors disappeared!!!

In the attachement, you will find the output of dmesg, when the system
hangs at "usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver". (I removed the custom
keyboard & trackball)

The message "hub 2-0:1.0: over-current change on port 7" is resulted by
pressing the power button.

** Description changed:

The problem is that the system hangs *sometimes* during boot up. We
found out that it's somehow related to our usb devices. When the system
hangs, we disconnect the USB HUB (disconnecting a device doesn't change
anything) and the system continues to boot.

  Our System:
  - TYAN S2915 Motherboard
  - 2 Opteron Quad Core CPU's (--> 8 Cores in total)
  - 4GB Memory

  USB HUB with devices:
  - HUB: SMSC USB2507 Chip is used (Bus Powered)
  - port 1: USB DVD drive (High Speed)
  - port 4: USB touch screen (Low Speed)
  - port 6: custom made HID keyboard (using Atmel AT91SAM7S64) (Full Speed)
  - port 7: USB HID Trackball (Low Speed)

What we tried so far (more than 2000 reboots):
  - disabling Legacy USB Support in Bios (--> works but isn't satisfying for
Customer)
- - disconnecting the custom keyboard & trackball solves the problem, but we
need them (changing their ports isn't really possible)
+ - disconnecting the custom keyboard & trackball changes the problem (other
error message), but disconnecting them isn't an option
  - disconnecting the trackball --> the problem gets less frequent
  - updating the BIOS --> we have the latest version
  - tested different linux kernels:
    - 2.6.24-18 (Ubuntu 8.04 after installation)
    - 2.6.24-21 (Ubuntu 8.04 after update)
    - 2.6.27-7 (Ubuntu 8.10 after installation)
    - 2.6.27-11 (Ubuntu 8.10 after update)
    - 2.6.28-4 (custom compiled kernel with default configuration)

So when does the system hang? That's not completely clear... the last
displayed line (during boot) changes most of the time:
  - [ 0.020389] ACPI: Checking initramfs for custom DSDT
  - [ 0.312865] ..TIMER: vector=0x31 apic1=0 pin1=2 apic2=-1 pin2=-1
  - [ 1.220292] checking if image is initramfs... it is

I'm not sure any more if it ever hung at this line:
  - [ 0.732091] Booting processor 5/5 ip 6000

+ After I removed the custom keyboard & trackball:
+ - [ 16.894055] usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver
+
+
Any suggestions are highly appreciated! THANKS!!!
