Addendum to my previous comment - to be clear, it wasn't making the copy of menu.lst that caused the problem - it was exiting from the shell that I'd been dropped into that seemed to cause the problem. Also, this happened during upgrade to kernel version 2.6.27-12, not -11. I figured the error was similar enough that I'd ride on this particular bug. If I ought to create a new one instead, please let me know.
