I did find a work around. However, I moved away from Kubuntu because I just 
can't appreciate the Konqueror experience.
The work around that I found is as follows: Within the partitioner of the 
alternate installation cd, create & format the additional LVMs. However, it is 
important that they not be mounted & or used. Once the system is up, one can 
then do the whole "mkdir," "gparted to label" & fstab bit.
