In jaunty I can specify xv overlay by using the option vo=xv:port=97 in mplayer (97 was the port i got using xvinfo). However I still have the same crashes with the entire screen turning a random colour and the system hanging, like what happened in intrepid 20% of the time when i start a video. So it is not a good enough solution/workaround. I am using Hardy now since xv overlay works perfectly in it.
