I wanted to add to this comment. This problem only happens when you upgrade Calc from 2.4 but if you do a fresh install with the same repo the highlight color is the nice blue that is very noticeable. I use this repo to get openoffice:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main I noticed today that the highlighting was light so I did sudo apt-get remove openoffice* then I went back and installed it again and it came up right. Hopefully this makes it easier to solve. Thanks!
