** Description changed: Ubuntu 8.10 (no problems with any previous release from 6.06) sets MTU size to 576 (ifconfig) on wired interface (here eth0) (previous releases takes the MTU value given by router DHCP - in this case 1500) which is to low for many routers. I have tested this with a number of different routers to find an acceptable value - 1000 seems to work on all routers in my collection. First found on a Netgear FVS318V3 (interestingly enough the V1 version of the FVS318 works ok with 8.10). Any way 8.10 should take the MTU value sent by DHCP if existing - some testing reveals that 8.04 also ignores the MTU value sent by the router (assuming that the router FVS318V3 performs according to documentation and sends MTU size - I have no means of verifying this as of now). Problem symptom is that communication starts up fine but as soon as something larger than 576 comes back it hangs (i.e. no response). Tried to override the MTU value statically but it gets ignored. Suggest setting a value around 1000 as default. Further more the PC:S I have tested this on has Gigabit cards - 576 is to low for those speeds.
