Thanks for asking. No, i haven't checked latest Ubuntu (Intrepid) because Hardy still works quite well for me.
However, it seems that I had resolved the issue in the meantime. It worked by (manually) assigning the key "XF86AudioStop" to "Action/Stop" through the "Settings/Configure Global Shortcuts ..." menu. (Used to be assigned to XF86Stop before).
