This bug needs to be opened back up because while changing the above sysctl setting does work, it doesn't bother to unmount the disc before it ejects it, so the disc needs to be reinserted to unmount it properly.
When I first got my laptop--preloaded with Ubuntu (8.04 at the time)--the eject button would do exactly as would be expected. That is to say that it would unmount the disc, and then eject it.
