It's a firmware bug. In windows you have to mess so hard with this device until it sends a Unit Busy SCSI result, then windows asks for a Test Unit Ready and the device locks up. It is fixed in the rev R?05 (?=Digit changes depending on OEM) and later. I, presently, after having RMAed the drive, am at the rev RR07 and thus not suffering anymore of this bug in the firmware. Possible temporary fix on ubuntu is to make a scsi_quirks.h file in the kernel where if a device matches a specified pattern the command linux sends to the device are substituted with working alternatives, or ignored altogether.
