For the record, TJ also gave me more tips on IRC:

since it looks like a conflict between the onboard video adapter (intel)
and the external pci-e adapter (nvidia), check for BIOS video
configuration. I found it, and it was checked to "auto".

After reset BIOS to factory defaults, I chose the PCI-e instead of AUTO,
and... it worked! Thank you very much for the tip!

After that, I changed it back to AUTO, and it worked also. I'm in the
process of re-installing the nvidia blobs (which I purged in the middle
of testing frenzy last month), and later will try the good old sarge
install, but it looks like TJ was right about the BIOS config resetting.

It even works with the vesa config (vga=0x031b) present, so I consider
this fixed for me.

Should I post any other tests? Should this report be closed as Fix
Released, or Invalid?
