Sorry for the delay in my response, it appears I currently have installed 0.995 and it's working flawlessly. You want to install (from the Debian project) the following packages for your architecture:
http://packages.debian.org/sid/libsane http://packages.debian.org/sid/sane-utils http://packages.debian.org/sid/update-inetd I'm using Ubuntu 8.10. If 0.996 is indeed what comes with Ubuntu, then I have an older version installed rather than newer as I had suspected; but either way this fixes it. Hopefully the Ubuntu team will have the default scan utility working by 9.04.
