Is it reproducible?
I did not found out yet an exact way to reproduce the bug, but it happens quite 
often. Of course, after moving some file to the trash. There is, however, one 
other thing which might deserve its own bug report, but maybe it is also 
related to this. After I delete some file from the desktop, either using the 
Move to trash menu command or simply pressing the Delete key, the file gets in 
the trash, but the trash applet does not change its appearance to signal that 
it is not empty anymore.

What Ubuntu version do you use?
I use Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), all updates applied.

If I can somehow find out how can this be reproduced, I will let you
know.
